new arrival

too giddy for words (and if you remember this post, you'll know why!)-- so i'll just post a couple of pictures.

update (sunday): props to

megalicious -- for fielding my v. excited phone call when i returned home from the bike shop and for assuring me that i will fall over on my clip-less pedals at least once.

confessing mermaid -- for tolerating my need to look at and talk about 'bike porn' for the past few weeks and for so selflessly sharing in my joy on saturday!

drs m&a -- 'bike advisors' and downstairs neighbours extrodinare. tonight marked my initiation into road bike culture -- the details of said initiation are topic secret, but i can reveal that the ceremony involves champagne, chocolate cake, a multi tool and a squeezy tube of grease.

Books and a bike. How apt ;)

That's a beautiful machine! I'm soooo happy for you! Hope your ride last night went well.

Yesterday was more of an inaugural ride-around-the-block as it started to rain soon after I headed out.

I just got back from my first 'real' ride ... as far as I can tell, it was about 25-30 k ... Whoo hoo. The bike is amazing ... Smooth as silk ... And climbing hills? Yowza!

Still thinking synthesizing thoughts for you ... Hope your night off was fun :o)

Hi Amanda!

Your bike looks SWEET! Great color.

I went with a Trek Pilot 2.1 wsd because I was more comfortable with the higher handlebar set up. But I rode a 1000, and it was smooth and wonderful, just hard on my back and wrists.

I feel like I'm going to need new bike riding lessons! I've never gone clipless, but that's the plan, so if you have advice, please let me know!

Nice to meet you :)

Hey there Bardiac,

The only advice I have to pass on is that for your first set of cleats, look into getting multi-release cleats rather than standard cleats -- I found them for my Shimano system ... not sure if they're available for other systems like Look, etc (Dr. Meg ... if you're reading this, can you help me out?). They give you more than one way to release the shoe and thus limit the possibility of not being able to get your shoe off. You can always screw on standard cleats once you get used to the whole shoe deal (or so I've been told).

Thanks for stopping by!

I highly recommend a friend's blog -- Meg is a PhD candidate in Victorian literature *and an international-level triathlete (!!)

Re: clipless. You won't need multi-release pedals. You're an athlete for goodness sake!

I'm using Shimano road pedals (PD-R540), but a pair of MTB pedals (PD-M540) would be fine too (they have a place for cleats on both sides, so they are easier to get into).

Blunt answer: Just get used to them :) Twist and pull. Sit on your bike while leaning against a wall and practice getting in and out of your pedals.

Yes, you WILL fall outside because you'll forget to clip out. You'll probably be going zero kilometres an hour because you'll be stopping, so it will be less of a fall and more of a keel over. Your pride will be bruised more than anything.

I have to admit, being old, I'm leary of the clipless falling thing. I should just get over it.
